La Trinidad — Xilitla Cloud Forest

La Trinidad is about 14 km west of Xilitla on a mountain road that climbs to around 1,950 m. The drive takes between 45 minutes and 1 hour. The final stretch is a very steep, broken dirt road, so it's best to drive in daylight and in a car that isn't too low, so it doesn't scrape.

Admission is $100 MXN per person. You can walk trails to lookouts, pools, caves and sinkholes (such as the Olla de la Luz), stay in wooden cabins for couples or groups (roughly $700 to $2,500 MXN depending on size), camp, build fires and grill your own food. The guided pre-dawn hike to the summit of Cerro del Pilón isn't covered by that fee: it's our Sea of Clouds Sunrise tour, booked separately with admission already included, and it reaches the summit at sunrise, when there is often a sea of clouds (it depends on the weather). It's cold up there, so bring a jacket.

You can visit year-round. The signature fog is densest in the rainy season (July to October). Because of the altitude the weather is cool and damp, so bring a jacket even if it's hot down in Xilitla.

The best season to visit La Trinidad — Xilitla Cloud Forest is Year-round; the fog is densest in the rainy season (Jul–Oct). The best time of day to arrive is Sunrise (for the fog) to make the most of the experience.

To visit La Trinidad — Xilitla Cloud Forest we recommend bringing: a jacket (it's cold up there), hiking shoes, food to grill (there are fire pits and grills), camera, cash. Important: The climb is very steep with rough dirt-road sections, so a vehicle that isn't too low is recommended so it doesn't scrape. It's cold up there (cloud forest): bring a jacket even if it's warm down in Xilitla. It's an inhabited community — come with respect and book ahead.
