Frequently asked questions about the Huasteca Potosina

Prices, what the tours include, the best season, how to get here, safety, and practical advice. If something is still unclear, message us on WhatsApp — we answer in under an hour, every day of the year.

How much does a tour in the Huasteca Potosina cost?

Our guided day tours run between $900 MXN and $1,950 MXN per person depending on the route, and they are all-inclusive. The most popular ones: the Surrealist Route (Edward James) at $1,400 MXN, the Tamul Expedition at $1,550 MXN, and Cascadas del Meco at $1,700 MXN. The RZR ride around Xilitla is priced per vehicle, starting at $1,600 MXN per unit. If you'd rather stay several days with lodging included, our packages go from $9,000 MXN (3 days) to $16,500 MXN (5 days) — and that price is for two people, not per person.

What's included in the tours?

Depending on the tour: round-trip transportation from your lodging in Xilitla or Ciudad Valles, breakfast with regional dishes, entrance fees to every park and attraction on the route, a NOM-09 SECTUR certified guide, safety gear, photos and video of the day, and a first-aid kit. The price you see is the final price per person — no add-ons at the trailhead.

How do I get to the Huasteca Potosina from the United States?

Fly into Tampico (TAM): it's the closest airport, about a 2.5-hour drive to Ciudad Valles and roughly the same to Xilitla. Mexico City (MEX) is the other common route — about 6.5 to 7 hours by road — and San Luis Potosí (SLP) is around 3.5 hours. You do not need to rent a car: we run private round-trip transfers priced per vehicle for up to 12 passengers, from $5,000 MXN from Tampico, $6,000 MXN from San Luis Potosí and $14,000 MXN from Mexico City. If you do drive yourself, drive the mountain stretch in daylight.

How do I get there from Mexico City or Monterrey?

By car, with Ciudad Valles as your destination: about 6.5 to 7 hours from Mexico City — 267 miles (430 km) on the Mex-85 / MEX-70 toll highway — and about 6 hours from Monterrey. By bus, there are overnight departures from Mexico City's Terminal del Norte: roughly 8 hours to Ciudad Valles, or 9–10 if you ride straight through to Xilitla. By air, Tampico is the most practical airport (about a 2-hour drive to Ciudad Valles, 2.5 to Xilitla); San Luis Potosí is another option at about 3 hours. Drive the mountain stretches in daylight.

When is the best time to visit the Huasteca Potosina?

For water at its most intense turquoise, come in the dry season: roughly November through June, at its clearest between March and May. During the rainy season (July to October) the waterfalls carry far more volume and are dramatic to photograph, but the water can turn brown and some river activities are suspended for safety. We run tours every day of the year.

Is the Huasteca Potosina safe to travel to?

Yes. It is one of the most visited nature destinations in central-northern Mexico and receives Mexican and international travelers year-round. For extra peace of mind we recommend traveling with NOM-09 certified guides, driving the mountain roads during daylight, and always following the safety instructions at rivers and waterfalls. Our groups are small (6 to 12 people maximum) and every tour includes safety gear and a first-aid kit.

What should I pack for the waterfalls?

A swimsuit, light clothes you don't mind getting wet and muddy, closed-toe water shoes or strapped sandals, a change of clothes, a towel, biodegradable sunscreen (regular sunscreen damages the rivers), a hat, insect repellent, cash (many sites have no ATM) and a waterproof pouch for your phone. We provide the safety gear and the transportation.

Are there tours for kids and families?

Yes. Several routes are low difficulty and work very well for families — Cascadas del Meco, the Stepped Paradise (Minas Viejas and Micos) and the Edward James Surrealist Route. Pricing is per person with a children's discount: about 70% of the adult price for ages 6 to 10, and 50% for children under 6.

Can I see the Huasteca Potosina in 3 days?

Yes. Three well-organized days cover the essentials: the Tamul waterfall, Edward James' Las Pozas in Xilitla, and a day of turquoise waterfalls (Micos, Minas Viejas or Puente de Dios in Tamasopo). Our 3-day / 2-night Adventure Package is built for exactly that. With 4 or 5 days you go at a calmer pace and cover more ground.

What is the Sótano de las Golondrinas?

It's a natural vertical abyss in Aquismón, San Luis Potosí, with roughly 1,234 feet (376 m) of free fall and up to 1,680 feet (512 m) of total depth. At dawn thousands of birds — swifts and parakeets — spiral out of the opening, and at dusk they drop back in. It's one of the most striking vertical shafts on Earth.

What is Las Pozas (Edward James' garden in Xilitla)?

It's a surrealist sculpture garden in Xilitla, a designated Pueblo Mágico, built by the British poet and art patron Edward James in the mid-20th century. Set between jungle and waterfalls, it holds dozens of concrete structures with impossible shapes, staircases that lead nowhere and columns left deliberately unfinished. James was the patron of Dalí and Magritte, and he never lived in the structures he built here.

How do I book, and how much do I pay up front?

You book online from the tour page: pick a date and the number of travelers, and hold your spot with a 30% deposit. The balance is due on the day of the tour, in cash or by card. You can also pay 100% at booking if you'd rather arrive with nothing pending.

Can I pay by card? Is it secure?

Yes. Card payments are processed by Stripe over an encrypted connection — the same platform used by thousands of businesses in Mexico. We never see or store your card details. Apple Pay and Google Pay also work at checkout. Prices are charged in Mexican pesos (MXN), so your bank may apply its own exchange rate.

What is the cancellation policy?

Free cancellation 48 hours or more before the tour, with a 100% refund including the deposit. Between 48 and 24 hours before, 50% is retained. Under 24 hours there is no refund, but you can reschedule once at no cost. If we are the ones who cancel — weather, safety, or a site closure — you choose between a full refund or rescheduling at no cost.

What happens if it rains on the day of my tour?

We run in light rain: the Huasteca is jungle, and the waterfalls are at their most spectacular with water coming down. If there's an electrical storm, a weather alert, or the river isn't in safe condition, we cancel and you choose between a 100% refund or rescheduling at no cost. We never take a group out on a swollen river.

Do you run private tours or tours for large groups?

Yes. Regular tours run in small groups of 6 to 12 people. For private departures, groups larger than 12, companies or schools, message us on WhatsApp with your dates and headcount and we'll put together a custom quote.

Do the guides speak English?

Our guides are NOM-09 certified and we have fully bilingual guides available — ask for one when you book and we'll assign them to your tour.
